KUCHING: Sarawak Energy is promoting the use of Sarawak Pay, Sarawak’s home-grown e-Wallet, to its staff to increase the number of users of the mobile app in the corporation.

Over 5,200 Sarawak Energy full-time employees will receive a once-off RM108 incentive payment upon registration of their Sarawak Pay accounts with the service provider. Currently, the app has recorded about 3,000 successful employee registrations since the incentive was introduced in mid-January. 

The company-wide promotional use of Sarawak Pay as the go-to cashless mobile payment platform is to support the state government’s efforts to empower its digital economy agenda. As part of this, Sarawak Energy electricity bills are also payable via Sarawak Pay.

Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Haji Sharbini Suhaili explained that the employee incentive comprised prize money from a recent award the company received for excellence in service together with a management top-up of the incentive.

Sarawak Energy won the Silver award in the Main State Agency category of the Chief Minister’s Trophy at last year’s State Civil Service Day.

“We received Silver in 2019 for our performance in governance and service delivery and wanted to share this achievement by dividing the prize money amongst all our employees who register with Sarawak Pay. We are committed towards advancing the state’s digital economy agenda and encourage our multi-disciplinary workforce to stay relevant and be more agile in adapting to IR4.0 by embracing various digital innovations. Going cashless with Sarawak Pay integrates this seamlessly into everyone’s daily lives,” he explained.
At Menara Sarawak Energy, the corporate headquarters in Kuching, Sarawak Pay is accepted at the cafeteria and coffee kiosk.
Sarawak Energy is leveraging on technology towards the digitalisation of its power generation, transmission, distribution and retail network.
To achieve more efficient and cost-effective work processes in its corporate key focus areas, the corporation has also embarked on enterprise-modernisation initiatives to cover various business management aspects. This included the introduction of integrated payrolls through the Sarawak Energy People System (SEPS) and systematic contract and procurement processes through Sarawak Energy e-Procurement (SEPRO) in 2019.
“This is in line with our aspiration towards becoming a digital utility by 2025. We are leveraging on technology in our day-to-day operations. We also want to demonstrate how important technology is to us and how digitalisation is a key enabler to achieve our vision to become a regional powerhouse,” he added.
Sarawak Energy was also the first utility in Malaysia to introduce a mobile app. ‘SEB Cares’ was launched in 2016 for customers to manage their bills, make e-payments, enquire about technical services, report on outages and receive real-time alerts and updates.
Initiated by the Sarawak government, Sarawak Pay is a fintech platform mobilised to digitalise Sarawak’s economy. It is the first e-Wallet in the Sarawak state government and the first e-Wallet implemented in the country by a state government.
Sarawak Pay was officially launched in 2017 to provide safe, fast and convenient mobile wallet and digital payment transactions for utilities, assessments, land rents and premiums, as well as goods and services.
